Emerald Bay is one of the most pictured places in the United States. It is known for its stunning landscape with a small island sitting below large mountain peaks. This state park has beautiful views overlooking the bay. You can also hike down to the water where you will find a large sandy beach along with the historic Nordic Vikingsholm Castle. In 1928 Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight purchased this land for her summer home. Her nephew, who was a Swedish architect designed the home with Scandinavian design as she had gained inspiration from her past travels from Scandinavia. Mrs Knight also built a small tea house on Fannette island where she would travel to the island by boat and would enjoy tea with her guests. The small, rustic, stone tea house had a fireplace and small oak table with four chairs. All that remains today is the exterior stone wall. Mrs. Knight enjoyed her summer home for fifteen years before she passed away in 1945. The property had two more owners after Mrs. Knight and it was sold to the State of California in 1953.
